What is a Homeschool Tutorial?
A homeschool tutorial is a resource for homeschooling families by which families contract with a professional teacher to teach a portion of their core academic curriculum— language arts, mathematics, history, and science.
Mountain Scholars is a Traditional-Classroom
The traditional classroom is one that is lead by an enthusiastic, energetic, well-prepared teacher who is passionate about her subject. The students look to the teacher for instruction, direction, inspiration, and pacing, rather than to one another or themselves.
Mount Scholars Tutorial is Curriculum-Driven
As the name implies, a curriculum-driven tutorial teaches through a specific curriculum. By contrast, teacher-driven tutorials are centered upon classes or subjects that particular teachers love or are well-equipped to teach. Teacher-driven tutorials may offer wonderful class-experiences. However, they can also be disjointed, with one class or instructional level not necessarily leading into another. Additionally, a teacher-driven tutorial only lasts as long as its teacher. If that teacher retires, or her children age-out, the tutorial can quickly collapse, leaving subsequent students without options.
Mountain Scholars follows Memoria Press Classical Curriculum
(Please See Section Below on 5th Grade)
Memoria Press curriculum is a well-developed, tried and true Classical curriculum. While it is widely used by homeschoolers, it is considered a “cross-over” curriculum that is well-designed for the classroom environment. The curriculum’s founder was a pioneer in homeschooling “hybrids”. She recognized the benefit of some strategic classroom instruction for the homeschooling family, while also maintaining her deep value for the family time and freedom afforded by homeschooling. The curriculum that she developed, Memoria Press, meets the needs of both beautifully.
Memoria Press curriculum is compatible with a Christian worldview and focused on developing the habits and skills of the mind, upholding strong character, and praising the good and the virtuous. It's doctrinal distinctive is simply the Apostles Creed and considered one of the more “ecumenical” Christian curriculums. It is enjoyed by Christians from many traditions, as well as families outside of the Christian faith who appreciate its clean, simple and effective classical approach.
